Why no sound in X2?

I had this problem once before, but that was with a slightly different
system-setup(3D-card and possibly the sound drivers), and the problem arose
only once I'd attempted to correct the then-problem of the shadowy profiles
the game supplied in place of the characters.
Now it has the characters, the music, the sound...but not the voices!?!
How is that at all possible? And how might I fix it?

Elfseeker@c2i.net, who, once having heard it with, is not willing to play
the game without speech.

There is an audio codec of some kind that comes with the
game, that you are supposed to run. Many people on the Egosoft
forums who had missing voices got them back when installing it.

If you have the US version, it's in your X2 folder, in the Util
subfolder. If you have the Euro version it's on the first CD
somewhere. It's called wmfdist.exe.
