If you Buy a Videocard you dont only buy the GPU Chip. You buy the PCB, the GPU Chip and the cooler. Usually you dont even touch the GPU chip.
In 99% of the time you buy a Motherboard of your choice and the CPU seperate. You also have to buy your own cooler for the CPU. The CPU DIE itself is actually not very durable since silicon is rather fragile compared to other metals. The Risk of breaking/cracking the Die by overtightening the Cooler is way higher without the IHS then it is with. You can see this as safety feature since there are a lot of people out there who dont know howto properly build a PC. *cough* The Verge *cough*
Yes, but they could be adding kinda same design with this ring around the chip, like GPU makers do, so that it's really hard to break or if not main lineup, they could just release it as special lineup. I am sure there will be plenty of demand. Somebody have to give them the idea
Nahh the Ring wouldnt help that much; just drop the Chip and its dead; press the cooler to hard onto the chip and its dead; drop the cooler and its dead; Give the Chip in the Hands of LinusTechTips and he drops it (and its dead)
There are so many people out there who would kill their CPU and wont get a replacement because it was their own fault. Its the same with Intel Sockets - If you bend or break a Pin in the Motherboard Socket its not under warranty. They can replace the Socket but you have to pay it. If somebody breaks his 300$ CPU there is no way to repair it. That CPU is dead forever.
Thats why there are tools out there Like the Delid Die Mate 2 from Der8auer (and a few other) to delid your CPU. Its not really worth to delid a CPU that is Soldered but its worth to delid a CPU with that crapy Intel Toothpaste (3rd to 8th gen). It worked perfect when i delidded my 6600k, easy to use and with some liquid metal the chips runs much cooler
EDIT: You werent able to use direct Die in the 6th to 8th gen because the frame of the Socket was higher then the Die itself was. So even if you delid the Chip you werent able to use Direct Die becasue the Cooler would never touch the Die (Unless you just crush the socket frame x) )
