Why not SCSI?

Ok folks I'm getting close to finalizing my decisions here.

I'm not quite sure though what sort of drive/drives I should get.
Theres the SATA, ATA, and SCSI...
I know that I want a fast drive for online game playing and I can always store music and videos in an external HD... so should I go with a SCSI, or SATA in RAID array or ATA in RAID array or what?
Is it possible to put SCSI in raid array?
 
You want speed? I have a 3 channel SCSI RAID controller that supports up to 15 drives per channel. Imagine a RAID5 cluster with 45 drives! Zoom!

You could take a card such as this one and load it with 3 used high speed server drives, and get great performance. But this isn't for babies, SCSI is real hardware.

Chances are you don't need a fast drive at all. A good ATA drive with 8MB cache should do you fine.

Or go with ATA raid. The performance is really close to SATA and it's alot cheaper. SATA hard drives are expensive and does not justify the performance.

I may be wrong, but I thought RAID 5 (even hardware RAID 5) was still a lot slower than most good IDE drives like a WD Raptor. I would think if you were looking for speed, then a RAID 0 stripe set with a tuned write size would give the best performance...
 
Level 0 is the fastest and most likely to make you cry when 1 drive fails and all your data disappears.

RAID5 is like Level 0 in that it stripes two drives, but in addition it adds a parity drive. That parity drive makes your array secure against data loss and corruption.

Whether or not Raid 5 is slower than RAID 0 depends on how fast the RAID controller can process a parity bit for each byte that goes to the other drives. Powerfull RAID cards have powerfull processors and offer unnoticeable performance loss by going from 0 to 5. Weaker cards increase performance loss.

depending on your budget, you could go with 3+ WD raptors in a RAID 5 config.... or hell, just get 90 SCSI drives and put it in a RAID 50 config
 
Yeah, how is SCSI cheaper? I would go RAID 0 with 2 x WD Raptor drives for speed. this would prolly give you faster or similar to RAID speeds (Some RAID drives run at 10,000RPM, although they do go as high as 20,000 RPM's, more common are 15,000RPM ones)

the above configuration will be sufficient believe me! :)
 
SCSI is ony cheaper for cheapskates like me. I can buy 80-pin 10k RPM SCSI 18GB drives out of servers for $14 each. Many have up to 2 years left on their factory 5 year warranty.

Best price/performance is to have both: use a small 18 or 36 GB 15,000 rpm SCSI disk for your operating system and a large IDE disk for your music, video files, etc.
