Why ps4 and xbox720 will FAIL

Wattage... period end of story. When in comes to gaming, nobody cares about power consumption.

I personally have a 100" mitsu projector and amp/receiver sound system that would impress many here on toms and because of being careful i have 2.... (two)... electric links in my home theater to power everything yet i still only draw 1150 watts peak, easily handles everything.(onkyo tr808 bw dm604x2 bw 602x2 lcr6, all s2 versions) its beautiful, no where near top of the line, but amazing at -$2000 used. 1150watts used total, i dont need a single link, even crappy old homes on a 10Amp cuicuit could handl it load.

Most are not enthusiasts like me, but if sony/microsoft are going to make a "console", which is already a "joke" among us computer "enthusiasts..... wow!

Given the tech and power adaptive tech involved....... WTF

Its done, we can affect this next gen now, but, after this... the bar needs to be sooooooooo...... sooo... far higher than this.

cuz if my 7950 will beat this ps4/xbox720 bs, plus i got a NAS network full incorperated like most peeps in my home(which will be the norm 2 years) for less than $200.. WOW!!!

Their gonna lose sooo much money!!!!

P.S....... when is amd/nvidia gonna release home vidieo game systems.

LOL what? What's your point about wattage?

I'm pretty sure the two major console makers have got a pretty good plan to have successful products. I mean, they are mega companies with hundreds of engineers working on the systems and you are a guy on the internet who has a low end home theater.

I'm confused, lol.

i agree, low end in the home theater market, but i bet less than 3 out of 100 have as much ht stuff AND are using my computer power to game on that.

this new "console" thing is a flat out joke....

their pulling the apple bs move, charge people for highly inferior products for an EXTREME price. runaway capitalism.

at the very least this next gen should be haswell/8xxx/7xx high end based for around $400

I would say the biggest issue is likely pricing, depends how much pricing will be
The specs are pretty competitive and could likely challenge high end PC hardware with good optimization for the console (except why octa core...)

For the PS3, a PC costing the same as the PS3 launch price back then can pretty much match the PS3 in gaming performance and offer productivity and steam as well

Who are "we" and "us"?
You're speaking for yourself, and comparing different demographics.
Of course PCs are way ahead of consoles, but they pretty much always have been.
Actually, if you look at trends, you could argue that PCs are going to fail, and will be overtaken by mobile gaming. I wouldn't say so, but you could definitely debate it.

The reason most people go to consoles is because they're easy to use, generally require less troubleshooting/maintenance, and have some decent exclusives.

The Wii, for example, may have been severely underpowered by hardware standards, but it provided an easy and inexpensive opportunity for anyone to pick up a controller and have some fun with friends.
Also there's the whole used-game market, but that's a separate discussion.

I'll advocate for PCs as overall best gaming platform any day [the advent of Steam boxes will be an interesting show of whether that argument holds any weight], but just because PCs have certain advantages over others doesn't mean the others will fail.

TL;DR -- reddit is probably a better place to brag about your home setup to get some karma.

I don't get 8 core either. Bobcat cores at that. A quad core (4300?) would have been fine. Only issue there is the large die at 300mm+. I'm sure they could have tweaked it to bring it down some. Quick look online didn't show me a stated bobcat size but rumored to be 74mm. Four in a square would be 148mm2? I guess we know why they went bobcat.

So far from what I've heard the issue for MS will be their rumored desire to kill the used market. I can see some backlash from that. Although to be honest us PC gamers have had games tied to our accounts for a long time from steam and other direct content providers. Sony's (and possibly MSs) issue for me is the target of 30FPS. 1080 is more mainstream then ever and even APU/IGPs are able to do 30FPS at 720 at least. A console in this day and age should be able to do 60FPS at 1080. I don't think PS4/720 will hurt either company nor will they "fail". But it is sad to see they are still (!) targeting settings so old by computer standards.

If you have a 12 core i9 9576345908305983 processor, 10GB DDR8 GPU x2, 128GB DDR10 RAM, and 60TB hard drive, that means nothing if the gaming industry and developers are developing games for the consoles and PC owners are only getting a port.

Consoles will generally (I don't want to assume "always") have the advantage of simply working and doing what they're supposed to do because that's what they are built for. In addition to having game developer support.

With computers, we're doubling them up as work machines, personal, downloading all sort of crap, dealing with OS issues.

It will only change if developers begin to actually develop high end games around the latest computer specs. And those specs are not based on some $500 "awesome gaming rig" that your friend said he can build for cheap. It's based on the $1500-$2000 machine with video cards in the top 3, fast CPU, multiple cores, games that utilize like 5-10GB+ of hard disk space, etc.

Even then, those specs somewhat become obsolete the following year.

I think what's happening is that developers also know they can continue developing impressive games (The Last of Us, Watch Dogs, etc) with current gen specs. Just because a computer can max out at 64GB of RAM, that doesn't mean Crisis 3 needs it.

Until developers say GTA6 will be developed exclusively for PC with maximum PC requirements of 24GB of DDR3 2800 RAM, Intel Core i7-3960X, Radeon HD 7990 6GB GPU, PC enthusiast will never be satisfied with consoles from a spec perspective because we can always upgrade whenever sometime new comes out.

I agree. You always have to boil it down to the lowest common denominator, the VAST majority of people dont know !@#$ about building or even upgrading a computer they have baught from Dell or HP (down to even a simple RAM switch out).

Console gaming will be popular because it is SIMPLE and EASY.

I care about power consumption. Low idle draw and low as possible load draw are engineered into all PC components today. People go out of their way to undervolt CPUs and GPUs to pull less.

Think you may be the minority that does not care about power consumption. I care because waste costs me money that could be better spent on $5 a cup coffee.

Or two $2.50 cups of coffee.

I agree with the original poster about the bar for console gaming needs to be raised higher than it has been in the past and how it currently is. I used to game a lot on consoles but it lost it's flair and I also had a computer which was able to play games and do much more. With a few upgrade I made the swap from console gaming to pc gaming. There will always be a market for console gaming though. Look at Nintendo >.>
I am a big fan of Nintendo Handhelds and will continue to be, but their console market just doesn't impress me anymore.

And yet you fail to mention Xbox live. That's the ONLY reason I own an Xbox. I play online with my friends who all have Xboxs. Yeah the PC has better graphics but the online experience just isn't as good for what I want from it. I will be buying the next gen console no matter how bad it is as long as my friends buy that same console. Yes they won't be as powerful as high end gaming PCs but I don't care about that. Its the multiplayer experience and ease of use that sells consoles
