Why can't this upgrading thing be as easy as if you want to save things save them if you want to carrying games informational cds ect... or whatever if you have xp sp3 and just want to upgrade to 7 just do it and save all of you junk on a cd of other usb hard drive and tranfer it later without incident why does it need to be any more difficult than that?

Thats what you get for running a 8 year old OS

if you were running Vista you could just upgrade to Win 7, so it is as easy as it can get

What i do when i reinstall windows is just copy my whole OS drive another HDD and then copy all the data off as required (that way i never miss anything)

Unfortunately, the older the OS you run, the harder it is to upgrade. Vital OS files (i.e. kernels) are hard to upgrade after a release or 2 of an OS, hence the issue. Never the less, it is better to do a fresh install. Your computer will feel brand new and you won't have to put up with any problems during the upgrade or down the line.

What's difficult? you use the W7 Easy Transfer Wizard to save your files and settings to another drive, dvd or usb stick.
You install Windows 7, then run the ETW backup file to restore your files.
To use the W7 Easy Transfer Wizard:
Browse to the DVD drive on your computer and click migsetup.exe in the Support\Migwiz directory.
