I recently bought some DDR3 RAM for an Asus motherboard, and although it met specs in the form of clock speed, buffered/unbuffered RAM and, with/without ECC, it still wouldn't work.

What else do you have to do to ensure that a given memory module will work with a given motherboard?

If it complies with the OEM specs it should run the components are not defective (the mobo and RAM). In your title you talk about "fit." Is the problem you are having with the RAM fitting into the RAM slots on the mobo? If so then maybe you should look at the slots closely and match the slot on the RAM to the slot in the mobo. They only go in one direction. If you have them properly oriented then they shoulc click down with a little pressure. If they are not oriented properly then they will never fit without breaking the RAM chips or the mobo.
