Why won't my 4k monitor run at 60hz?

My monitor suppors 4k at 60hz, I am using an HDMI 2.0 cable, and using an R9 290. However, it still only shows 30hz.

I'm sure I'm using the right connection on the monitor for 60hz, but under windows resolution/hz changer, the options only go up to 30hz.

Try going into the settings of the monitor itself and see if there is an adjustment you are missing. And what monitor are you using?

I had issues using anything but a DisplayPort cable on my Dell 4k. With DP it always runs at 60Hz np. You might try DP and see how it works.

The HDMI 2.0 spec wasn't finalized until late 2013. So pretty much any GPU released before 2015/late 2014 (the R9 290 is from late 2013) only supports HDMI 1.4. 4k over HDMI 1.4 is limited to 24 Hz. You're going to have to switch to displayport if you want better than that.

I've been telling people not to invest money into 4k equipment for the last couple years because of this. The HDCP 2.2 spec was finalized around the same time. Any 4k equipment that doesn't support HDCP 2.2 won't be able to play protected 4k content in 4k. Basically, 4k equipment from 2013 and most of 2014 is obsolete.

Use displayport on your R9 290, if your monitor supports that, typically one of the display ports is a DisplayPort. 🙂

And agreed with Solandri above. Huge waste when resolution alone isn't enough to bring you a better overall picture quality. Luckily that's mostly for AV(R) and TV and not necessarily PC, but still a huge downside when it comes to available content. UHD Netflix looks about equal to blu ray, that's not a good thing. But this is about monitors but I digress.

Any gpu after that time is still wrong. To be more specific, right now it's just the nvidia 900 series. No amd cards do and those came out in 2015 although most are rebrands so won't anyways. But even fiji which is late-ish 2015 still don't have it.

Looks like your right, however my monitor doesn't seem to have DisplayPort. Do you think an displayport to hdmi 2.0 adapter would work?
