Why wont my ps/2 keyboard work with usb adapter

Hello,

My existing ps/2 keyboard input stopped working and I bought a usb adapter. windows detects the device but says it can't make it work. How do I fix this

What type of USB to PS2 adapter did you buy? Some actually convert the PS2 signals to USB and will work with any PS2 keyboard, but some just connect the wires and they rely on the keyboard to recognize it is connected to an adapter and switch from PS2 mode to USB mode.
