Why wont my refresh rate go above 60hz Hdmi 2.0

I have a gigabyte gtx 970 and a monitor that is 144hz. I bought a hdmi 2.0 cable that is capable of 4k at 60 hz and I cant change the settings so that I can get to 144hz at 1080p. Why is this happening

HDMI cannot support 144hz at 4K resolutions. You must use DVI dual link or displayport. Max refresh rate with HDMI 2.0 is 60hz.

While HDMI 2.0 can handle 144 Hz, most monitors don't support HDMI 2.0. I suggest reading the monitor manual/support page. It should tell you what connection to use.

60 Hz is the limit for 4k, but that is more than enough bandwidth to handle 144 Hz at 1080p.
