Wi-fi connection in Germany

Hello,
I have a netbook with wifi which connect to internet in uk perfect but now I am in Germany and where I am staying have wireless but for some reason my netbook states its not connected. Anybody got any ideas Thanks

when you try to connect to the network did it ask you for a password?
