Hello,

Thanks for stopping by. I placed this in Work and Education, because, well I need some suggestions for something we are trying to achieve at work. We have several carts of Chromebooks throughout our buildings. We are trying to find a way to easily locate where the cart itself is, without relaying on others to tell us. What we are looking for is something that has the ability to be tracked via WiFi to give us the location of the Access Point it is connected to (or something similar). We had the idea of throwing a Raspberry Pi in there, but we will run into an issue with power when the cart is unplugged from the charging ports to be moved from room to room. We were thinking of using a Raspberry Pi and some sort of backup battery for the short location changes in the building. The budget remains unnamed, but within reason. Keep in mind, we will not be using the Chromebooks themselves to locate the cart. The piece of equipment will be placed within the cart, out of reach. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Well since you are physically attempting to track a cart per se you need to re-evaluate the requirements.

"Google", for example "How to track devices".

E.g. something such as:

Or, more applicable perhaps:

http://gaorfid.com/tool-and-industrial-equipment-tracking-system/

I believe that you may have multiple options to consider.

Key is to identify the explicit tracking requirements....

Super glue or bolt something inexpensive and trackable on the cart and you should be good to go.....

But do bear in mind human nature and Murphy's law.

Somehow, somewhere, a cart will get lost.....

Keep the solution as simple as possible and make people...

Keep the solution as simple as possible and make people accountable. Likely to be less costly and more reliable.
