I've read several threads here that have been fairly helpful regarding LCD's and am to the point where I am going to take the plunge. I am in the process of ordering a new machine with the e6600 conroe (overclocked) and a 7950 gx2 card. Based on what I've read here I have narrowed my selection down to the samsung 214t or the 244t.

My real question is how much of a difference is widescreen going to make and what do I need to be aware of?

I use the machine for work and gaming...no first person shooters...mainly games like WoW and Oblivion.

Any comments would be appreciated.

I've got the Samsung 215tw......what you need to be aware of is that there are a number of games that you can't 'hack' into widescreen mode. EA's sports games have been problematic. But if you're into WoW, widescreen is spectacular. And Oblivion is too. Both have native widescreen support. I'd recommend that your widescreen is at least 21 inches so that you have enough vertical height. I think your choices should be no problem. I went from a 22 inch CRT (20 viewable) to a 21 inch widescreen and lost only a half of inch vertically. I don't think it is worth going widescreen if your vertical dimension is compromised. So, I say go for it.
