What is the benefit of the OS/Programs, being in GPT?

I'm in W7 and I know the limit of 2.2TB or there about and in order to have a drive larger they need be set to GBT.

But if the OS/Program Drive is set to GPT straight out of the box and gets placed, on a small 120-250 SSD, is the rest of the system, set too GPT?
If loading larger drives like maybe a couple 4TB's in RAID1, would it need any more intervention or be accepted as GPT mode and show total drive capacity, (3.457TB -3.756TB) as it would in W8.1 & W10?

Thanks

Solution
You have to use GPT:
  • if you want to use full capacity of drive larger than 2TB;
    on boot drive, if you want to boot system in UEFI mode.
In all the other situations GPT is not necessary. You can use MBR as well.

And yes - if you install OS in UEFI mode, boot drive will have to be in GPT partitioning style or you will not be able to install.
For installing OS in legacy mode, boot drive will have to be in MBR partitioning style.
