I have installed Windows Live Mail for the purposes of Email but find it annoying to have to "excavate" a couple of layers down in "Start" each time I want to use it. Is it possible to place a shortcut to it on my Desktop?

Yes you right click on the icon and sent it to desktop as a short cut.

I take it you haven't discovered instant search yet?

Start typing "live mail" in the search box on the start menu, and Windows will find the shortcut for you in no time. This works with any application, file or folder. Once you've located the shortcut, you can pin it to the start menu or the taskbar.
