Wierd Graphics Card Temperature

First of all I use MSI Afterburner to check my temperature and it is okay untill I run a game at which the temperature suddenly skyrockets untill it just shuts my computer down, it just started to happen recently and I did not have any problems before. But the odd thing is when I press tab and go to my desktop the temperature drops about 5 degrees immediately, which is unreasonable if you ask me.
