I was using a gnomish elementalist in the SMC. I was at level 3. I
'w'alked down a corridor, and suddenly, "You advance to level 4." Why
did this happen?. I did not see any traps, and there were no strange
messages before this.

Hmm... kill something with poison perhaps?

Ordinary traps don't give you experience. However, door traps do (even
if you didn't make them). If you turn on the Show_Experience option, you
might see a random [+60xp] pop up, which means that a stupid little
kobold or something on the level tried a door and got blown to bits as a
result. If you see a string of xp notices, it probably means that a
creature in a (trapped) tension room tried the door, and blew themselves
up along with some of their pals. This sort of experience gain is a bug,
and I'd imagine it's uncommonly annoying if you're at an important level
threshold (say, just below level 17 before entering the Pyramid).
