Wifi adapter not being recognized

My computer and WiFi module included with my mobo were both running peachy until today. I don't know if this triggered the issue but it started happening shortly after this: My nephew kept plugging in and out his usb controller until I told him to knock it off. I unplugged it, plugged it back in, and it worked fine. After about an hour he got off the computer I noticed the WiFi connection was out completely, not even a WiFi icon with the strength bars. Weird. I restarted the computer and the WiFi symbol would be in the tray momentarily before disappearing again. I downloaded the latest WiFi drivers, and it gave an error told me to insert the adapter before proceeding. I tried system restore, I even tried reinstalling Windows and reformatting. There is a light on the adapter itself that keeps blinking. When I go into device manager there are several unknown devices and one "SM Bus Controller", I thought it might be this but I installed drivers for it and still the WiFi doesn't work.

Solution
yes it is a wifi modul just not in the sense that you see it. you cant take it out like a wifi but none the less it runns on the same bus. i take it you have the msi big bang or something similar.. try installing live update and see if you can find anything missing. such as updated drivers or bios..

did you also enabel the device in you network properties?
also i would enable all wifi' s you have you can always disable them in windows. but they will work together
Sorry I accidentally downvoted down your answer, I tried to upvote but it wouldn't let me (and I can't undo it how frustrating)!!! I downloaded every driver MSI had available for my mobo. Now I get an error that an attached USB device isn't recognized (though my WiFi module isn't a usb adapter could it be this?) Other than my mouse and keyboard there are no usb devices attached. There are no unknown devices in my device manager. Still no WiFi. I disabled the WiFi adapter through the bios and tried 're-enabling again, just as a last ditch effort. Nothing.

(Also how do you undo a down vote??? Again so sorry!!)

Thank you for your help koffeeshop, yes I have MSI big bang. After disabling the wifi in my BIOS and re-enabling it, I restarted my computer for the final and last time before giving up for the day when I noticed that when Windows booted up it said a device driver was missing again. Once again I tried downloading the WiFI driver and this time it recognized the adapter!!!! It installed the driver and It works like a charm now :) I'm not sure what happened there! Thank you for your help (I contacted a moderator about the downvote too, sorry again)
