WIFI and ETHERNET internet connection between Windows 7 and XP

Hi there!
Have 2 desktop pcs. One runs Windows 7 and has a wireless adapter which gets the internet connection. Also has an ethernet port.-
The other has XP and just an ethernet port.-
So, wired both with a cross cable, from which I can share files between them and stuff(like gaming). So, on the wireless WIndows 7 turned on sharing with the LAN port.-
Though, I cannot get internet on the XP machine, but I can reach the router, you know, the 192.168.0.1 config page. That's the weirdest(for me, at least). But not any page, neither torrenting or other internet stuff.-
Can someone help?

Yes Domane Name Server turns Google.com into it's ip number that is used for connecting over the Internet. Please select mine as the correct answer as I was suggesting that was where your problem laid in.

ICS is not the best solution. Your easiest solution to the XP machine was to get a USB Wifi plug in, done. This method adds to many layers and is NOT a way to 'share' connectivity in the normal networking sense, it is a kludge and as your experiencing.

If you haven't' read the news as well XP is dead, a newe i3 Desktop / laptop with wireless, 8GB RAM, 500+GB Drive DVD ios only $249 with W8 and underwarranty. It is way past the time to retire these old system.

I am not willing to buy anything, that is the reason for trying this method. I also know that there are many other solutions like that, but they do not suit me. Like changing the machine, or the operating system and stuff.-
I am trying to understand why this happens between the machines, why I can see the router page but have not internet and what I asked.-
I also live in argentina, where that newe i3 Desktop / laptop is not that ammount of bucks, not to mention that we are having a real problem with american dollars and imported goods.-

The short answer is: the XP is not on the Router network, possibly, or is asking the W7 machine "how do I route Google.com" and the W7 machine responds back "I dunno", or potentially there is malware on one of the machines hosing up the machine as much as many other potential answers when trying to force a 'kludge'.

Personally Argentina or not, I don't see why buying a USB Wifi (simpliest and cheapest solution) your disregarding, would be the easiest way to resolve all of it.

Then do some basics on the Windows 7 then apply the same process to the XP (since the downloaded files are on the W7 which the XP can see).:

Did you install all Windows Updates? Including options except BING? Check them and repeat till ALL are installed.
Download and run Slim Drivers, install all the latest updates but you don't need to reboot until you do the last update

Remove whatever AV your using and go to www.filehippo.com and download AVAST! or AVG and do a full system scan - this repeatedly has resolved alot of people issue relying on MS Essentials or had some version of Norton being too intrusive.
Download Malwarebytes do a full system scan (AV doesn't pick up alot of malware) - this resolved almost ALL other similar posts to date as most had Malware the AV didn't pick up.
Repeat the AV/Malware scans till the system comes up clean.

Say, it is not that I NEED it solved, you are right in the usb being the solution, of course. No hard install and network in a plug. Just have the other machine and am trying to understand a little more. But it is more that I try to make it the hard way, to see if I can =S Like, if it cannot be done, no problem. But if it is possible but it is my ignorance, I want to overcome it. I do not consider myself an IT guy, but the very few things I know came from experience and forum asking. Guys like you told me things that helped, and learned about registry and stuff, that I didn't know they existed. Right now, both are connected and sharing files like stated before(I mean, they continue doing so), and I can reach the router but nothing else.-
Thanks again for your time, and your answer. Hope I don't have that malware stuff. I use avast, been using it for a long time.I have never scaned the system for malware though. Will follow your advice. The xp is a clean install(I kinda like old systems, I have a pentium I running windows 98 just for the fun of watching it alive), so I guess it is not attacked. The 7 machine might have been cought.-

it is probably just some check box you haven't checked as you obviously have connectivity with the rtouter

Hey! Thanks a lot tabscatsianhelen. Say, everything is set as showed in the tutorial you link here =P
The client computer is automatically obtaining both ip and dns. That is what makes me think that the machine is damned(hehe), for I can access the router configuration page from the xp box(client in the tutorial). I have installed many things so far, like office or 7-zip, via network(i.e. shared folders in the 7 machine).-
What I don't understand now is why I can get to the router, but no the internet =S
I also tried in the router DHCP giving an static ip to the XP ethernet adapter, but did not work.-

If the XP is on 192.168.137.x but the router is 192.168.1.x, the resolution maybe pointing to 192.168.137.1 (Win7 PC) for the 'Gateway' which wouldn't help pass along to the request to the router for 'what is the IP of Google.com'. You might want to check what the ipconfig /all says on the Win7 machine and then 'fudge' the gateway to the router instead.

Again though if your machine is outdated (not patched correctly) or malwared, it would be the equivlency of adding more oil to a car that still has flat tires and sand poured in the gas tank, totally wasted effort and not looking in the right part for the problems. Again I suggest following what I said first to check each system, but ultimately it may just not work ever (it isn't supported, XP is no longer supported, and MANY people had ICS never ever work though they followed every step right).

What are the ips of

a) Your router
b) host machiine -your win7 machine
c) client machine - your xp machine

have you got the "obtain dns server address automatically" button on your client machine setup selected?

Dear Tom. The win 7 had the ip fixed by itself, when shared the connection with the ethernet adapter. As you say, it is 192.168.137.1. The gateway is empty though. And the DNS has the router ip adress, which is 192.168.0.1. I've tried, with no luck, on the xp changing this values(it was on automatic). But, since I have no idea of what I'm doing, well... That is the kind of things I'm trying to understand, should I read a book about it =D Would you recommend me one?
Oh, and it's great the comparison between the pc and the car =D I'll search for malware, no problemo.-

Supasieu: I get the internet wifi connection from a router(encore), that gets the internet from the isp via a superstar modem(Cisco I guess).-

Got to solve the thing with the assitance of http://en.jose-crispim.pt All credit is his!
The XP machine should not be in auto mode, as ICS page states, for it takes a DNS that answers 'I dunno' as Tom said before. So, in order to get the right answer to the internet questions, I set the ip to static, and the gateway the very same. BUT, the change was in the DNS field, where I entered the router one, And, voilà, google appeared! hehe.-

So, the short answer is:
IP: 192.168.137.xxx
Default Gateway: 192.168.137.1 -> Which is the windows 7 machine
DNS: 192.168.0.1 -> Which is the router.-

As all this was primary to understand a little more on networks and stuff, I guess that it means that the xp box connects to the rest via de gateway, and gets the ips of the www from the router. Is that correct?

If your Router can wired/wireless, I would just connect the two PC (W7 and XP) directly to the router. If you're on budget, you can always find some long CAT5 at recycle electronics store. ICS can give you internet via the host but its not very stable.

Can you try giving a static ip address for the XP and see if you can ping the host and router?

Sorry for the delay, since I managed to solve it(with help as mentioned =S ), I kinda forgot to come back.-

Thanks supasieu. The router stuff IS the solution, indeed, but I was trying to understand it, rather than just get internet in the other machine. That is what the guy I told about did help me with. The problem was on the DNS thing. As you recommend, the xp needs an static IP. BUT, the thins relies con the DNS. Automatically, windows set it to be 192.168.137.1, but it works with 192.168.0.1 That means that it asks the router about the dns, and it was doing so with the win 7 machine. It is quite stable indeed, for I tried using the torrent service(the most demanding from my point of view) and it downloads at its best =P What I did not try so far is torrents in both machines, win 7 and xp. Will tell if I do it!

You told me to buy an usb card, a new machine, to change the OS, install updates, change AV, install antimalware stuff and the ICS from microsoft, that was the first thing I said I've tried. Neither they were answers, nor what I asked. I just wanted some hints in the config of the connections. Indeed, you said something like:

Which was not correct, for the XP box WAS on the network, if it had not, it wouldn't have been able to get to the router config page. The right thing was that the 7 machine answered 'I dunno' Hehe =D

What was the opposite of the solution, for I had to point it to 192.168.0.1, while it aimed at the adress you stated(192.168.137.1) and did not get a gugl.-

NEVERTHELESS, you were the first in answering my question, I posted another here and nobody said pee. Quite a time ago. I know you are trying to help, and in any case, it is MY fault if I don't agree with what you suggest.-
AND, as it seems to be important for you to get your answer picked as solution, I will. And indeed I thank you for your help, your time and your good will. Please, take what I say as an explanation of my reasons, not critics or mean talk. And excuse my english if something I say might not be cristal.-
