wifi causes overheating

laptop overheats in wifi mode only? tried bypassing onboard adapter with usb adapter, still overheats. cleaned inside and out! works fine when connected via ethernet. will connect wirelessly but overheats and shuts down in a few minutes.

Sounds as if it has to work extra hard to connect wirelessly and the fan runs faster to keep up. Does it get as far as connecting or fail before it gets a signal?
