Windows 7 Device Manager says "Device works properly"
However, system software does not connect.
The connection was interrupted during an Ubuntu update some days before.
Since that event, reconnecting the HP 4730s fails.
Another notebook works properly with the router.
Diagnostic software needed.
Thank you very much.

I agree,. However, I have no english Windows 7 for the proper english terms.
You find the Information from HwInfo64 below instead.

Make and model: modem, router (or modem/router if combined).

On your computer run "ipconfig /all" (without quotes) via the Command Prompt.

Copy and paste the results here.

One possible issue is the WiFi adapter driver: Microsoft and 8+ years old.

Make and model laptops/notebooks - both the one that works and the one that does not.

You may be able to update the WiFi adapter driver via the applicable laptop or notebook manufacturer.

A third party website being a last resort.....

There is a WLAN whitelist in the HP4730s Bios. The list restricts the number of applicable models of WLAN cards on four (which were available at the time when the notebook was manufactured).
The WLAN card driver is updated automatically within two days.
There is a vulnerability issue with Bluetooth function of the card.
The most recent card driver disables the Bluetooth function of the card.
Bluetooth is only enabled with the predecessor of the most recent driver
However, see above.

Unfortunately, the technical terms introduced by Microsoft are only available in an English Windows version.

So exactly what is the problem? Is Atheros AR9285 a new card ? If it's old, it could be dying.

Does its wifi work in Windows (connect to the router)?
Does its wifi work in Ubuntu (connect to the router)?
Does Bluetooth work in Windows?
Does bluetooth work in Ubuntu?
Do you really to want/need to make bluetooth work or you were just testing?

Do you want to make the adapter work in both environment or you were just testing Ubuntu?

I personally experienced errors many times while doing Linux/Ubuntu/Debian update in the past. However it's not adapter issue but files not available, internet, dns or even time zone issues. You might try again a few days later.

Wifi does neither work in Windows nor in Ubuntu.
Windows device manager reports device is working properly.
Ubuntu does not have a device manager of comparable capabilities.
I have checked Bluetooth neither in Windows nor in Ubuntu.
The whitelist prevents the usage of a modern wifi card.
I have already checked this.
In the internet, one person offered for another HP machine a modified Bios with a whitelist adapted to a given type of card.
I would prefer to replace the wifi card by an USB based wifi button.
