Evening all,

First post so go easy on me ! 🤣

I have just moved in a 5 bed ( over 3 floors) Victorian Terrace which is need of renovation bit by bit.

We had VM installed last week with the 200meg BB, over the last few days we have noticed that the WiFi signal won’t reach the end of the house 3 rooms away and only just makes the 2nd floor!!

What would be my best options to increase the WiFi coverage of the house ? Repeaters, mesh WiFi or try and run some cat cables to each floor of the house as I need change the locations of some sockets around the house ? If running cat cables how easy would that be and would I need any other equipment ?

😃

Mesh is mostly marketing hype it is only slightly better than a repeater. A wifi repeater should be your last choice. It is extremely dependent receiving a good signal then being able to send that signal to the remote rooms. Sometimes that is impossible when a floor/wall etc is absorbing large amounts of the signal.

Your best option is to run ethernet cable and place a AT or a router acting as a AP in the remote rooms. This is the gold standard design that has been used for years by large corporations......they don't use silly mesh devices.

Next would be something appears to be a ethernet cable. Most common is powerline devices but how well these work depend on the electrical wires. The other one you see is MoCA and it is used when you have coax tv cable going to the rooms. Again both these you place a AP in the remote room.

When you have no other option you consider repeaters. The only key difference is some "mesh" units have a extra radio. They use this radio to talk to the main router and then have 2 other radios 2.4g and 5g to talk to the end stations. Because they are using different radios it helps a bit with the repeater issues. They still can not solve not enough radio channels. Be very careful if you go that route the vast majority of mesh systems are just simple repeaters with a fancy name and easy to configure software
