I receive wifi as a part of my rent & would like to get it on my pc. Do I need an adapter or router or both? And do I need anything else? Thanks.

You will need a wifi PCIE card or a USB adapter. If it was prebuilt it may already have it installed but probably not.

Check device manager to see if you have a wifi card.

The USB devices for WIFI are reletivly cheap at around $20.

A USB wifi adapter is all you need. The router is supplied by the cable company and (in your case) the landlord.

Something similar to this:

Is there a way to block my information?

Your PC, yes. Don't turn on any file/folder sharing.
The sites you go to? Not so much. You're going through a router that you do not control. A sufficiently crafty landlord can see where you go, and on some sites (non-HTTPS), see your userID and password.

Would he do this? Who knows? But I'd be careful about what data you pass through that router.
At a public internet cafe, would you log on to your banking website? I wouldn't.
That exactly what this is...a shared resource where you do not control the flow of information.
