Wifi grid antenna and usb adapters.

Hello! So, i recently got a 5ghz tplink wifi antenna, and i was wondering if i could pair it with a 2000mw 2.4ghz usb adapter. I mean, does it matter that the antenna is 5ghz and the adapter 2.4? I've seen a lot of 1000mw alfas being paired with grid antennas, but the frequencies weren't mentioned at all.

It will generally work you will just not get as much gain as one optimized to 2.4. Good vendors have antenna maps that show the signal level and gain for the various frequencies.

If you have a 2000mw 2.4 adapter it is very illegal or the vendor is deceiving you. If it is ALFA they tend to always include the antenna gain which is very non standard especially if you can replace the antenna. It likely is a run of the mill 200mw radio with a 9db gain antenna.

Yes the adapter has a 9dbi detachable antenna. In fact it doesn't mention wether it is 2.4 or 5ghz, but i assume it is 2.4 . My plan is🙁 http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?model=TL-ANT5830B ) grid antenna placed on the roof. 5m lmr400 cable running down to the usb adapter wich is connected to the pc. will it work? what range will i get?

You can do it that way but the LMR cable will eat a lot of your gain. Almost nobody does it that way anymore. You can get antenna and electronics all built into a single unit for about the price of the antenna and no expensive LMR cable.

What do you mean by "You can get antenna and electronics all built into a single unit for about the price of the antenna" do they have built in usb adapters ane cable extensions? The problem with this is that the antenna and cables have already been purchased. Thank you for the advice, i will now proceed on buying the adapter.

No they use ethernet so that you can go 100m up a pole if you need and they can connect to anything unlike USB devices.

If you already have the antenna then you have very limited option.

The price point on the airgrid antenna with the built in electronics is about $70 so take that into account when you buy you USB adapter. You may be better off starting all over.

Oh ok that was some useful info. I have found the adapter for about 30$ and i got the antenna and cable for 25$ from a friend who did't use them any more. He had it set up for transmitting signals.
