Wifi issues in my dorm

So in my dorm I am provided one ethernet port. Which is great for my computer but I have terrible service here and I want to set up wifi for easy mobile browsing. I have a 2 in 1 router/modem but it only takes a coax cord for connection. My family had it lying around at home and I would rather use it than buy a router. Is there anyway I can convert from ethernet to coax?

A cable modem/router will not work for you and you cannot use any adapter to make it work as a router. While it is possible to use a few rare models as access points, you will not have access to the main router in any case.

Bottom line is you will need to buy a router for wireless, but beware -- in a dorm wireless does not work well because all of the channels will be used by many others, which creates interference for your router signal.

I would download and run a free wifi analyzer like inSSIDer from HERE to look at the current wireless use around you before buying anything. Usually the 5GHz channels are less used, but people are figuring that out in dense living areas.
