wifi signal trough router

I have access to public wifi which is of course unsecure. Can I use a router to boost and make it secure?

It will always be unsecured between your hardware and the WIFI source. You could use a VPN server to encrypt all the data within the unencrypted WIFI.

A directional wireless bridge like an Engenius or Ubiquiti is the best option. It can work as a router/firewall.

A Client Bridge would be the option.
Combined with one of the options Kane listed above, you should be good to go. They both support VPN tunneling on the devices themselves if I'm not mistaken.
