WiFi slowing down wired internet/gaming!

A while back my internet suddenly started playing up and after much troubleshooting/swearing I realised it was the WiFi connection slowing things down teribbly!

My ISp says that the connection at thier end it perfectly fine and did trace rt's etc to verify the drama.

I thought that maybe my D-link 2740B was the prob so I have just purchased and new modem and router thinking that all will be well (netgear DM111P modem and ASUS RTn56u router).

But last night it happened again!, but it seems to be only my partners galaxy S3 wifi thats slowing it down, my phone and her laptops wifi are not affecting anything...

can anyone please help me with this?

So your partner's Galaxy S3 is slowing down your internet connection? Everything is good to go until the S3 connects. I would suggest installing a bandwidth monitor on the S3 to keep track of its incoming/outgoing connections. I have heard complaints in the past about the Galaxy S3 having an unusually slow web browsing speed, but have not heard of it actually clogging down other networks. Does your partner have a problem with any other wireless networks?

At this stage that seems to be the case, I'm trying to think back as to when I brought the S3 and when the wifi/wired dramas started happening.

heres the scenario from last night, was playing DOTA 2 with the wireless activated on my phone and my partner on her laptop wifi with no apparent lag issues (approx 90 ping), then when she went to bed and turned on her phones wireless and was just browsing pages and I noticed huge lag, checked ping and it was over 600...

the S3 seems to be the broken link in the chain, I don't understand why though.

Go into your router and disable support for 802.11b and g and only allow 802.11n. Also turn off support for 802.11a if you have a dual band router.

If for some reason this is negotiating one of these older protocols it can causes issues for some routers.

Since you now have 2 routers you can use one of them as a AP and use it to support those protocols on a different channel leaving your main router only supporting 802.11n

Worst case you should be able to use the second router to support only that device even on 802.11n.

Thank you heaps for this, I will try this when I get home from work, you mention 2 routers though, I'm only using the one now..

I have my netgear modem linked to asus router which handles the wireless and also the 2 PC's wired to it. So the way I read your comment I can just disable the applicable 802 standards and that might fix it?

I thought you had a dlink and a asus. You should be able to use the dlink as a AP

The D-link mentioned was the old router I have replaced with the above setup.

The D-link as well as having the issue i'm still having was very unstable with connection in general as well.
