Wifi speed slow

Hello, I have a linksys WRT1900AC router, my gigabit ethernet connected desktop speed tests at 600+mbs down and 900+mbs up.
But my laptop, surface book 2 13" , originally only gets 40mbs down/up. After uninstall and reinstall the wifi driver and changed my wifi channel to a specific channel instead of auto. it's now at 250 down and 400 up.
Is this normal or should my wifi speed match closer to the hard wired speed? what else can i do to improve
Also btw if I plug my desktop directly to the wall without the router, i get 900+ up and down. but for some reason the download speed reduces to 600ish after i plug in the router.

I power-cycled my cable modem (SB8200) and router (Linksys WRT1900ACS). Speeds were ~189/40. Went into my router and turned off Prioritization. Speeds have been 925+ during the day and 850+ in the evening ever since.

Are you talking about Media Prioritization or? i dont see another prioritization in the router settings
