[SOLVED] Wifi stop working but led still on

Hello,

I recently purchased a TP-Link Archer C80 to replace my Freebox Revolution (provided by my ISP) which has a very iffy wifi. The range is great, signal too and looks stable, but it stops working for about 20-30 sec 4-5 time a day

I already checked if there was a specific device having problem with it, resetted it, updated it, checked if wired have the same problem (doesn't have) or any power outage but nothing. The wifi stops working on any device while the led/lightning is still active on the router. Tried CMD on my router/google multiple time and its just the wifi that stop working nothing else even if only 1 device with barely any bandwidth in use

Could it it be because i'm using the access point mode? I'm using the ISP router through ethernet on my TP-Link and then i use wifi to broadcast. Asking because with an old netgear on my other home, i had no problem of this sort but i didn't use the ISP router
 
Solution
You can't just disable the dhcp on the ISP router and use the tplink as a router it is more complex than that. Your would either need to remove the ISP router completely or run router behind router.

If you did not change the lan IP that is highly likely your problem. Both routers are likely using 192.168.0.1 as their lan IP. So very randomly the traffic will go to the wrong device....ie the tplink router which does not have a direct internet connectio

All you do is log into the tplink router and change the lan ip to say 192.168.0.200. Problem is it may not be that simple when it is already set to AP mode. You would need to disconnect it from the internet router and connect your pc to the tplink router directly. The issue...

Not sure about the connections that you are using.

My understanding via a line diagram where ---> represents an Ethernet cable:

ISP === (coax, DSL, fiber cable) ===> Freebox Revolution [LAN port] -----> [WAN Port] TP-Link Archer C80 [LAN ports] ----> wired devices and ~~~ wireless ~~~> wireless devices.

Feel free to edit and correct my line diagram as necessary. (Also refer to physically numbered Page 8 of the Archer C80 User Manual for another "view".)

How many wired and wireless devices in the network?

The Freebox Revolution should have its' router functions disabled (DHCP off). Only the TP-Link Archer C80 router should be enabled for DHCP IP.

On a working, wired computer run "ipconfig /all" (without quotes) via the Command Prompt and post the results. You should be able to copy and paste the results without needing to retype everything.

The lien diagram is correct yes : ISP = Freebox Revolution (LAN) === TP-Link Archer C80 (LAN) = wifi 2.4ghz + 5ghz


There are only 2 or 1, i'm testing myself as i have bought it recently not going to use many device untill i find a fix for this "bugged" wifi


DHCP is indeed enabled but i'm using the other router as access point. I will try to remove the Freebox all together and try to use the router directly*

By the way there is a fixed phone just near both of the router. I'm using two wifi (Freebox and TP) should i disable the Freebox if i switch to router mode on TP?
 
It should work the way you have it cabled. Be very sure the DHCP is disabled on the tplink router, setting it to AP mode may do that automatically but check to be sure. You only want the DHCP on the ISP router. You also should have changed the lan ip on the tplink device.

Not sure this is pretty stand way to "fix" poor wifi on a isp router. I would disable the wifi radios on the wifi router just to be sure you are connecting to the tplink and to reduce interference from the unneeded radios.

If you can completely replace the ISP router that tends to be the better option since it make configurations much more standard and simple. I guess it depends on if the ISP allows it and if you have a separate modem. Your tplink likely only support ethernet wan connections.

How do i change the lan ip on the tplink?

The ISP router is perfect wired tho, max speed, no packet lose, no matter what so i should just disable its wifi? Disable wifi, let DHCP on and use the tplink as access point or rather disable DHCP on ISP and using the tplink as router?

I'm going to restate the problem but the wifi "stops" working on any device, like infinite page loading, while pinging cmd nothing appear as if the "internet was lost" (but if you plug a wire nothing wrong) and then it start working again, always 10-40 secs, and it does it 4-5 a day. Beside a microwave, i don't know what might disturb it, only have a lined phone and the other router nearby (already tried with my own microwave no problem)

And also yes, i can't connect the optical gigabyte cable to my router, might need to a buy another one but i don't think the problem lies there, as the ethernet is "perfect" and the same whatever on ISP or tplink router

The issue is if the dhcp server is off then your pc will not have a IP and you must manually set it.

What I would do see if you get lucky and can get into the tplink with the ip 192.168.0.1. If not rather than mess around a lot I would just factory reset the tplink and start the process over but the very first step would be to change the lan IP. This is likely part of the instructions on how to set the tplink up as a AP.

Did you set up 192.168.0.254?

I have reseted the setting of the tplink router and made sure it had a different ip from the other freebox router, aswell as disabling the wifi functions of the later

I will give it a try for a few days pinging and if it happens again i will reply. Thanks for the help btw
