I dont know if this is the right section to put this in but I had an old router tucked away for some time and decided to connect it to my modem to change my IP address. So I plug in the router and it works fine, except I forgot the username and password to the router login page. I then decided to reset my router, but now every time it turns on the wifi symbol on the router stays on for a split second and turns back off, I've tried multiple things to get it to work but I simply cannot get it to stay on. Any advice helps, thanks!

Solution
So step 1 is to take the router and toss it in the trash can and buy a modern one.

That router is more than 10yrs old it uses only 802.11g which is 2 full generations old. It also uses a proprietary version of 802.11g that is not standard.

192.168.1.1 is the default ip used netgear. Many years ago routers used to use proprietary configuration installation CDs. Not sure if this router is that way or not. Make sure it really factory reset.

Now if the router actually function but just does not activate the wifi you can see the ip the router is using with the IPCONFIG command in your pc. It is the gateway ip.

Haha, so sorry, my fault, it is the NETGEAR 108 Mbps Wireless Firewall Router WGT624 v3, hope that helps.

Have you checked on the configuration pages that 1/ Wireless radio is enabled and 2/SSID broadcast is enabled??

How exactly do I get to the configuration page? 192.168.1.1? If so I cant even connect to 192.168.1.1.

Connect via ethernet cable, from a pc bring up a command prompt and type "ipconfig" look for the gateway address. Type that in your browser. If memory serves me right the login is admin/password

I would try doing a reset again hold the reset button in for 30 seconds, pull the power with reset still being held in for another 30 seconds the plug back in the power whilst holding the reset button still for another 30 seconds. By default the wireless is enabled.

I did what you said, the resetting didnt help, it still flashes on for a second and turns back off, and when I went to check the default gateway it was just blank, nothing there...

Yeah it is really old, I did what you said and the only things that come up are
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::2dd7:ed3:4963:51bb%9
Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.81.187
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

Okay so I set the IP to 192.168.1.200 and the default gateway to 192.168.1.1 and now this is what it looks like.
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::2dd7:ed3:4963:51bb%9
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.200
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
But when I go and enter the default gateway into my browser is says the site could not be reached...

Might be time for a new router!
