Wifi won't go through thick condo walls

We recently moved into a condo building (from a regular house). We had no trouble in the old place getting wifi throughout our 2-floor, 6-room apt. Now the signal seems not to pass to the room next to the router's room (just the other side of the wall), much less to the study down the hall! I've got a booster/extender gadget, but it's hard to place it at the exact line of sight of the router such that the signal never has to pass through a wall. Any suggestions?
