Okay so i had i5 - 4440 3.1Ghz i want to upgrade it to i3-8100.. So will it perform better then my i5 4440 considering its specs it has 4 cores and will it bottleneck gtx 960?

Solution
i5 7400 is less than I3 8100.
i5 7500 is similar than I3 8100. go to cheaper combination CPU + motherboard in your country.

I suppose that I3-8100 + H310 is cheaper than I5-7500 + B250.
I would avoid I5-7500 + H110 unless you are absolutely sure that you have the updated bios
Honestly, it is not much of an upgrade. The coffee lake CPUs only have about a 5-10% performance increase over Haswell and the 8100 is only clocked a few MHz higher than your 4440. I would not make the change as you will not see much improvement and you will still need to buy a motherboard and RAM.

As for bottlenecking your 960, no it wont in most games. But in CPU heavy games, such as BF1, you will be under the minimum requirements and there will be some issues. If I were you, I would look at spending an extra $50 and get the 8400 as it will be a better upgrade.

since he has to buy a new mobo.., yes I3-8100 is better than i5-4440 and is very good for a GTX 960.

I3-8100 is a 4 core 3,6 GHz. eighth generation.
I5-4440 is a 4 core 3,1 GHz base 3,3 turbo fourth generation.

considering the difference of generations, count that the I3-8100 is 25% faster.
