The card is 12.9cm long, and the MoBo is big enough to support 2 of them w/o issues IMO. Where did you read it takes 2.5 slots? That's not the correct way to define width.

No, you won't have insufficiend airflow with 2 G1s.

Also, MSI does not have coil whine, Asus has, MSI is the best 970 according to multiple reviews. And it edges the G1 in nearly all depts. like noise levels, OCing, raw performance, etc. I don't know from where are you reading, but many reviews state MSI as the most silent, coolest and an extreme OCer. G1 is not bad at all, and no, bigger cooler doesn't account for better OCing, MSI still wins in almost all temp benchmarks, an imp reading if you want to OC a card. My opinion would be MSI in SLI, though G1 won't be...

Using a Core i7 930 2.8GHz


I do have a massive third party CPU cooler though. Why does the gpu card state that it takes up 2.5 slots then? as i only have 3 PCIe x16 slots.

If I stick with the gigabyte can I still have 2 with sufficient air flow?
My initial choice was an MSI 970 but some people report coil whine and the Gigabyte does better in benches. Plus its bigger size is due to bigger cooler doesn't that make it better for OCing?

I saw the width on a few sites. One being this one http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-gigabyte-gtx-970-g1-gaming-7010mhz-gddr5-gpu-1178mhz-boost-1329mhz-1664-cores-3x-dp-1x-hdmi-1x-d (it is on the spec list when you scroll down and look to the right)

I was considering a GTX 980 but don't think it is good value when you can get 2 970s for a little more which will be better. I'm probably going to start with 1 970 to see how far I can go in games with it.

My PSU is a Cooler Master GX 750w and I put my build through a PSU calculator and it reports I need 540w to run 2 970s however according to this list of PSUs http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1804779/power-supply-unit-tier-list.html it comes under tier 4 - "Not for overclocking systems or high end gaming rigs. May not even output labeled power and fail standard ATX specifications slightly. May even use cheap components to meet a price"
Will it still be ok? runs my current setup ok with a single ATI HD5870 which at the time was a good card

Avoid the specs from sellers, the 12.9cm I reported is from Gigabyte's site. And yes, a 970 is much more value/money than a 980. Also, that PSU is sadly very low quality, not advisible for your build, don't rely on calculaters, wattage is fine, but quality is poor, the caps are cheap, they may melt on high load risking component's life. I'd advise to get a better PSU, EVGA B2 750W is a good value for money, as is Rosewill Capstone 750W. Any tier 1 or 2 PSU with 700W or higher wattage will suffice though.

Damn I was hoping to just upgrade my RAM and GPU starting to think I should just do a whole rig upgrade as my mobo isn't SATA3 capable so my SSD is on SATA2 at the moment and my USBs can only support 2.0

Could I keep current PSU if I only get 1 GTX 970 instead of SLI?

Just had a thought, I know Gigabyte state 12.9cm for width but how did you conclude I could fit 2 of them? I read on the official Nvidia forum of someone having issues with this same card in SLI because the back plates were touching causing the fans to spin at a constant 100%

Ok and just to clear up any confusion:
this card uses one PCIe 3.0 slot?
And on the Gigabyte website the power requirement is 550w that seems a lot for a single 970 I know PSUs have been mentioned here already but just so I'm sure a Tier 1 or 2 PSU rated 750W is enough to SLI the 970s?

but have I read that right, the MSI is 12mm wider? It is width I was more concerned about with fitting 2 of them in SLI as my SilverStone FT02 case is quite tall so I assume length is ok

Look here:

The length of GPU affects the drive cages, the width affects the MoBo and PCIe slots, the height affects the broadness of case.

Oh ok lol. Neither should height affect it. Width, well, depends on MoBo slot width, and ATX MoBos easily can take two of them, wheather MSI or G1, but that was for conventional cases (no offense). Even here, case is immaterial as its big enough, I'm certain MoBo can take both of the cards well w/o issues, MSI or G1.

The black slots at the top left I am guessing are the slots the 970 goes in? as my mobo spec is:

PCI-Ex16: 3
PCI-E Gen: Gen2 (2x16, 1x4)

not sure what the blue port is to the far top left of the last black PCIe slot but wouldn't another GPU cover that up? as the gap doesn't look all that wide
