Like the title says I have a Asus Maximus VI Hero 1150 z87

I currently have two r9 290's and it look like a third card may not fit

Im planning to replace them with three gtx 970's G1 Windforce cards

Solution
You best bet at this point is either sell the extra card or get the Asus ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VI EXTREME or MSI XPOWER Series that supports Tri SLI.

Other option is just to sell your system and build an X99 platform.
your board only supports 2 way SLI. The red slots are 16X while the black is 4X. AMD supports Crossfire on 4x slots but that is a PCIE 2.0 not 3.0. performance may suffer or not work at all.

it says "The board features SLI/CrossFire on Demand technology, supporting up to Quad-GPU SLI or Quad-GPU CrossFireX configuration." But that doesn't mean it has the slots for it.....

Would a motherboard like this be better suited for 3-4 cards?

Asus X99-DELUXE/U3.1 Desktop Motherboard - Intel X99 Chipset - Socket LGA 2011-v3

That is x99 chipset. You will need a different cpu for those boards ie. i7-5960x, 5930k, 5820k.

It is soc LGA2011-v3, but to answer your question the x99 deluxe board supports up to 4 cards but you would need a 40 lane cpu. So if you are doing 4 cards then go with one of the first 2 of the i7's I listed

BTW do not get 3 GTX 970's as 1 980ti out performs all 3 cards in SLI. When having cards in SLI, 2 GTX 970's with 4gb of vram each would have 8gb of vram right? WRONG!!! it only has 4GB.
get the 980ti and it would have 6gb if you chose the right card :)

I already bought the cards as they were a good price, so good that if I told you you wont believe me lol

Plus I like the look of multiple gpu so if the triple 970's are not as good as you say they are, then I can always look into triple 980s or dual 980ti an or dual titans

True. 2-3 cards look better than 1. But don't go spending yet. 4GB OF VRAM should be enough any major game title so wait until the right time to upgrade
