Will a 1.4ghz AMD work on a KT7 board?

Its not a raid board. Its just the regular one. My menu in the Bios only goes up to 1.0ghz. Is there a way to put a 1.4 in there or do i just need to buy a whole new board and chip. Which board would you recommend?

Also will i see a difference in 950mhz to 1.4ghz? Thank you for your time.
 
The processor should work but no gurantee that it'll work at 1.4 GHz. You must have a good power supply. Also ram should be of good quality to ensure you can overclock the fsb (if you don't want it running at 200 since the 1.4 GHz can run up to 266) As far as the settings in the BIOS you can just change it to user defined and set the multiplier and fsb manually. I would strongly recommend trying to get your fsb up as much as you can. Unfortunately on my KT7 I can only get it up to 110*2 =220 fsb on a 1Ghz. If you want to get the best performance out of the processor, upgrade to a new mobo. If you don't wanna shell out the $$ just yet for a new mobo, a new 1.4 would work for the time being but keep in mind proc prices are always dropping.
 
I have a KT7, as well, and would like to know the answer to your question.

These are the two rumors that I have read. (I hope someone that has actually installed an Athlon 1.4 responds to your querry).

1. The 1.4 works as long as you get the 'B' and you leave the L1 bridges locked. This means the multiplier is fixed but this is not a big sacrifice because you can't get a 14x or higher multiplier via BIOS, anyway. You need the 3R BIOS or higher for the KT7

2. You can use 'C' 1.4 but you must modify the appropriate bridges so that the defaults are the same as the 'B'. Same limitations apply.
 
you must flash the bios with latest version kt7.3r which gives the option to sellect 12plus on multiplyer then you have to adjust the multiplyer on the chip by disconecting the L1 bridges (check this out first i'm not possitive about that bit)then when you boot up the cpu tells the mobo its correct speed
other wise the bios will only recocnise the cpu as 12.5 multiplyer max which is 12.5*100 1250mhz
but like i said read up on which bridges to connect & which to break to attchive *14 14*100 = 1400mhz
then you can crank up the fsb a bit to oclock if you like
(or buy a 133 fsb mobo)!!!!!

So this implies that the 1.4GHz Athlon WILL work with my A7V KT133A...right?
 
yes on a 133 bus mobo its not difficult 10.5 multiplyer(as long as you've got a 266 fsb cpu)
but on older mobos with the kt133 chip set you only get a 100 fsb so you have to set the multiplyer to *14 and most (if not all) only have upto 12.5
hence the palava to fit a 1400

p.s.sorry calv didnt mean to sound abrupt but this is just about the only subject i'm sure about(i've been there)!!!
 
Oh yeah, there is a third rumor (which I hope someone can confirm).

3. Any Athlon 'B' with a default clock higher than 1250mhz (meaning the 1.3ghz and 1.4ghz, at present) can be tricked to the correct multiplier by selecting 5x. That is the 1.3 Athlon B changes 5x to 13x and the 1.4 to 14x despite the motherboard being set to 5x.

Please someone, confirm or refute this. I'd like to know it really works.
 
Ok, here it is. A friend of mine has the KT7 (I have the KT7a). He has a 1.2/200 on his board, overclocked to 1478, I believe (with a 113 FSB, I know that's right).
He has the 3R BIOS and he bridges are unlocked/closed (came like that). He hasn't modified the other bridges to change the multiplier.

I know what the 1.2 and others can do. The problem is we are looking to hear from someone who has actually used a 1.4.

According to <A HREF="http://www.viahardware.com/faq/kt7/kt7faq.htm" target="_new">Paul's Unofficial Abit KT7 FAQ</A> the 1.4 only works on a KT7 if the L1 bridges are locked, open. I don't know the reason for this only the speculation that it is necessary for the 14X multiplier to work. Your friend doesn't need to access the 14x multiplier to get up to speed. (By the way, how does he get to 1478mhz when 12.5 x 113 equals 1412.5?) However, the 1.4 does the need 14x multiplier by default. Oveclocking is probably not the problem, just initial defaults at POST.
 
If you just want a fast processor then don't waste your money with a new board. Just get a factory unlocked 1.4GHz Athlon and update your BIOS to 3R and multipliers up to 17 will be supported.

He uses a multiplier of 13. Ok, so it's really 1469. I said I wasn't sure.

I have the 3R BIOS on my KT7 and the multiplier still only goes up to 12.5. I'm not disputing that your friend gets that high for overclock. I thought maybe you just listed the wrong FSB.

Actually I'm envious. My KT7 won't go over 106mhz FSB.
 
Nope, I'm positive it's 113. I know that because we were comparing memory benchmarks. His are higher than mine for the FSB (even though mine are better overall). I was trying to figure out how to get mine higher.

yer if the cpu is locked ie the l1 bridges are cut the cpu tells the mobo its a 14* multiplyer
softmenu just reports (12 or higher)it might support higher speeds but you cant adjust it from within softmenu you HAVE to change the L1 bridges
 
Have you actually installed an Athlon 1.4 on a KT133 motherboard, yourself, or do you know someone that has done it?

no i aint
my 1400 tbird is a 133fsb which i got for my upgrade (kg7)
but i did consider getting a 1400 100fsb for my kt7 but after trawling the web for weeks i got all the information i could & desided it aint worth it
but it can be done as i said!!
but personaly i think its to much hassle for an old mobo & you'll never get the max from the chip

No I won't be getting the most but an Athlon 1.4 (100mhz) would be a whole lot better than my Duron 600 even if is overclocked to 1007mhz.
