Will a 2k monitor be a good buy for my hardware or should I stay with my 1080p?

Heyo, I've got a problem regarding monitor resolutions and I can't figure it out myself. I want to know if I'll see an imporvement going from a 1080p, 60hrtz monitor to a 1440p, 144hrtz monitor but I don't know how to judge if my computer will be able to make good use of the new monitor. So the specs for my computer are...

Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1080 8GB Turbo OC Video Card
16 GB Gskill Trident Z RGB DDR4-3000
I7-7700K (with a dark rock pro 3)
Asus Maximus IX Hero
Windows 10

I'm thinking that I can get at least 60fps on a 2k monitor with 144hrtz refresh but I just wanna be sure before I sink money into a new monitor and figure out I've wasted my money on a resolution I won't be able to enjoy. I hope I've been coherent enough for someone to help me out. Thanks for the help!

Solution
With your I7 7700K and GTX1080? I would really try to get those 144Hz 1440p IPS display with GSync.
Your PC can still max almost all games while maintaining at least 60fps.
If you really aim that 144 FPS, you can simply tone down some settings.
If needed someday in the future after your PC is no longer strong enough for 1440p, you can also run the games on 1080p or anything lower than the max resolution of your monitor (1440p)
You have a very strong cpu so I wouldn’t worry about that. Just lookup benchmarks and reviews of 1080’s to see how they run at 2k. Personally I think you have a good setup for 1440p/2k 144Hz as long my as you are ok to turn down a couple of settings in more demanding games.

Depends on what games you are playing. GTX 1080 isn't powerful enough to drive truly demanding games @1440p/144 FPS by a long shot. You'll be turning down settings to hit that (even a 1080Ti isn't going to cut it). I'd recommend using DSR to see how you like the performance hit. I've got both a 1080 STRIX and 1080Ti STRIX btw, so I'm not just blowing this out my arse.

This is from benchmarking I've done the past week:

You could also hold off for 4k 144hz ips screens, which are supposed to be out sometime this year (Technically they already are, but only in 27"). or wait and see what Nvidia is doing with its big format displays.
