I am currently using a pci wireless adapter to connect to my at&t router upstairs will my speeds be faster if i bought a router and connected to it wirelessly

Probably no, but we'd need more info as to the actual setup.
What do you have, specifically, and where.

I already have a at&t router upstairs so my internet speed on my pc downstairs is slow. Would buying another router like the asus ac66u and putting downstairs and connecting to that router instead make my internet speeds faster?

You don't need another router.
You need a wired Access Point, or powerline devices, or simply a Cat5e cable from upstairs to downstairs.

Adding an access point or a router as an access point would likely increase your signal strength. However, it doesn't make anything faster, it would simply increase the quality of your connection. If you want it to be "faster" talk to your ISP.

Maybe.
But again, you don't need another 'router'. If you get one, you'd just have to dumb it down to be just an Access Point. So just get an Access Point.

Plus...how are you planning on the two devices talking? WiFi? If so...it will still be bad.
The Access Point or router downstairs will see exactly the same crappy signal that your PC does now.

You really need some sort of wired connection.

It's just a preference for me. I agree with you Cat5e is plenty but, Cat 7 isn't expensive at all. So why not just get the faster cable and not worry about it for another 10 years. Assuming the cable lasts you that long.

At a similar price, sure. But there won't be any performance difference for a loooong time.
And in 10 years, I'd probably pull fiber through that conduit.

True true. I agree there won't be any performance difference for a long time but at the end of the day if you had the option:

$4.50 for a single hamburger. or $4.50 for a double bacon cheeseburger.

I'd choose the latter. 😉 But, like I said earlier, I agree that you won't need Cat 7 for a long way down the road and even by the time you do need it, it will be obsolete.
