Yeah, ratios. Forgot to mention that as well. A given transmission might not be a good fit based on what the rear differential ration is as well, so that's a good point. Power curve is another consideration, although there can be some leeway in that matchup, but not too much, so you really want to use tried and true combinations because the maths or the hair pulling and crying sessions aren't worth the headache for most situations.

Rear end gearing is another concern, 94-95 Mustangs with a 5.0 had a 3.08 (Manual) ratio and a 2001 with a 3.8L shipped with a 3.27. 3.08 on a V6 would give you the best MPG and higher top speed but also the slowest takeoff and torque. 3.55 to 3.73 generally are where you find the best balance and a more enjoyable diving experience for a daily driver. It's pretty easy to change out that gear and also match the speedo gear up to match the right speeds.
