Will a 590 or 690 work in my motherboard

I have a ASUS M5A78l-musb3 and I want to run 590 or 690 and its only got one pci slot

You only need one PCIe slot, and you've got a 2.0 slot. You're just fine.

No SLI support it seems. You could do that mod somewhere on OCnet called Hybrid SLI, however it can be buggy and I don't know a whole deal about it.

If I recall correctly, dual gpu cards doesn't require an SLI motherboard, only when 2 single gpu cards are installed.

Jazzy, you are correct, not having SLI support doesn't matter - SLI support just means it has the PCIe slots and bandwidth, and controllers, to handle SLI. Since the 690 has sli controllers IN it, and uses a single PCIe slot, then it's a moot point.
