will a AM3(+) CPU in AM2 socket?

Solution

lt is an OEM Socket AM2 board, that came with an AMD Athlon II quad core
ADX645WFK42GM processor, I want to replace it with something better, and I have read that you can use a AM2+, and AM3 cpu with a socket AM2 board (just not vice versa), but I haven't seen anything about the AM3+ cpu's

Did it work ? Maybe if the motherboard is am3+ then a AM2 Processor will fit in it , otherwise not possible

You should be able to upgrade to a Phenom II X4 CPU if it came with an Athlon II X4 CPU.

That is probably an AM2+ motherboard. As they can handle AM2/AM2+ and some AM3 CPU's. Only AM3 Motherboards can possibly handle AM3+ CPU's (not very many AM3 boards do).

The primary reason it won't work is because Bulldozer and Piledriver do not have a DDR2 memory controller. The Phenom and Phenom II do though. Hence the fastest chips to be supported on that board would be from the Phenom II line but you would need to let us know what OEM board that is because they usually have a very specific list of CPU's that it will support.

no one saidanything about "fitting" I believe "work" is obviously the question 😉

ACER ASPIRE X1420G

It is hard to find much information on that board.. Acer doesn't really post much online apparently the fastest CPU that I can find that would likely work in that board (given it was posted being in that board) is the Athlon II X4 650 which isn't much of an upgrade as it just has a bit of a clock bump over the 645. BTW that is an AM3 motherboard given what I read and should be using DDR3 as the X1420G's that came with that CPU used a Nforce 6150 chipset with DDR3 memory.

WHY DOES IT SAY SOCKET AM2? :??:

Where does it say socket am2? I found two models that held the 645 the ur10p and the u5832 both used ddr3 meaning they were AM3 boards. If you have the system running you could run CPU-Z to find out specifics on what is in the system.

it says "Lotes SOCKET AM2" on the cpu socket
