Will a core i3 6100 handle modern day gaming?

My friend is considering to try out pc gaming as he was always a console gamer.We did some research together and it seems the core i3 is in he's budget line.

Yes, an i3 will do.
but a i5 6400 or i5 4460 have a lot more power for a bit more money, and both will run perfectly on a low end motherboard and moderate power supply.
