Solution
You should be fine. The SSD would make a bigger difference than the RAM. You can clone the hard drive to the SSD, then make the hard drive your 'D:' drive for movies/music, etc. (Keep windows & applications on the SSD, data and swap on the hard disk.)

hello thanks for your response, whats the best SSD?
I need a 150gb drive.

I would pick up a 240GB drive, they've dropped in price lately. orlbuckeye is right, samsungs are great. Your machine has SATA 2.0 so the SSD won't run as fast as it would in a newer machine but it will still start up MUCH faster, be quieter, and run cooler.

Good Luck!

I have a machine with about the same specs as yours. It's like from 2006 duo core processor that will only go to 4 gb of ram. It has 2 160 gb hard drives. I ran the compatibility test and it said everything will run. I ran the same test on my still under factory warranty Alienware and it said Intel bluetooth wont work, Norton 360 won't work but Symantec sent me message they will fix in next couple of weeks and also it said VMPlayer won't work unless I reinstall in Windows 10.

Also my Alienware came with a 256 GB MSATA SSD which i upgraded to a 1 TB MSATA Samsung EVO. I works great and i just cloned the 256 GB ssd.

Hello i will be upgrading to windows 10, but before i do that i need to upgrade my ram to 8gb and getting an SSD.

Well you won't be able to do a clean install until after you do the upgrade according to what I read. You get the reactivated Key after you upgrade. Ram will not help you if your running a 32 bit OS. If you are staying 32 bit i would just get a bigger SSD in place of the dollar for memory.

The SSD will actually last longer if there is more free space (google ssd wear levelling). Because you're using the drive on a SATA 2 system, get a larger (240GB ssd) that is a little lower in performance. (A new 250 GB Crucial SSD is $92 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148945.)
