Will a FCPGA988 chip work in and PGA988 Motherboard?

Hi people,

I have been given a Asus A73s laptop with a i7-2670qm 2.2 chip in it.
The mobo is fried and i was wondering if i could use the chip in my sons emachine E732-382G50Mnkk i3-380m
The Asus is an FCPGA988 chip but my sons eMachine uses a PGA988 chipset.
Can I use the i7 my sons computer?

FC stands for "flip-chip", which is what all modern CPUs are. PGA988 is the same as FCPGA988, the FC is often just left off.

Be aware that you can only use the CPU if you're placing it in a chassis that supported 45w CPUs. If you replace a 35w or lower CPU with a 45w one it's likely to overheat and constantly throttle/crash.

They are not the same socket. There are multiple sockets with 988 pins but they are not compatible even though intel calls them all 988 on the ARK pages which confuses things. It did slot in but would only power for a second before it stopped. I don't think the power supply is sufficient to run it 🙁

The pins are not the same placement and you probably bent a pin. You could also have short circuited and fried things as they aren't the same pinout.

I put the i3 back in and everything is working fine so i was lucky there
