Will a GTX 770 2gb work for today's games?

I currently have an R9 285 which has some issues with games I play, and I was looking to get something like a 770 or a 970, and I found some guys selling 770's for around $160 and thought I might go with that, I am just not sure if a 2 gigabyte video card is something to still buy? I only game at 1080p on one monitor and usually have something open in a chrome browser on the ohter, I was wondering if it would be worth the extra $160 ish to get a 970 or not?

The 770 is a great card for 1080p. Newer cards with 4GB are geared towards the latest games at 1440p or higher resolutions running very large textures. If you're gaming on 1080p, then a 770 is still great, I use one weekly at a friend's house when we have LAN get-togethers. The 770 is also a large upgrade to the 285, as seen in benchmarks here at 1080p. You can change the dropdown menu to look at other game's performances. http://www.anandtech.com/show/8460/amd-radeon-r9-285-review/10

However, I will say that that same friend also has a system with a 290x, and it is very good for the price. If you can find a 290x for $200-220 it is well worth it to get your foot into the 1440p door. However if you have problems with AMD drivers, you should stick to Nvidia if that's why you're upgrading.

With the games I have ended up with, my 285 has issues running full multiplayer lobbies on max settings whereas people I know with the 770 seem to have a better time, and don't nvidia cards accelerate video renders faster or something? I plan on staying at 1080p for awhile and usually do not use anti aliasing, so I think a 2 gig card would be fine, not sure if having a second monitor running a browser or something affects it a ton, that is what is making me want to get a 4 gig card.

I upgraded my gtx 770 superclocked card, it ran perfectly for my 1080 monitor. I'm upgrading my monitor so I have to depart from the wonderful 770. ;( I'm planning to sell that card on ebay if your interested.

As for your question for the 970, I don't think you really need it, I'd only upgrade like this: 650>960+, 560>970+

Okay, and does having a second monitor up doing some arbitrary thing have a large impact on VRAM/would a 2 gig card be problematic
