so, before you guys tell me that i should upgrade to a core i5 or something, i built this PC as my first in november 2015, and i want to get 2 good years out of it, here are the specs

mobo: GIGABYTE GA-G41MT-S2PT
CPU: intel xeon x5460 OC'ed to 3.42 GHz
GPU: GIGABYTE GTX 750 2 GB GDDR5 OC'ed to 1.4 GHz
RAM: 8 GB DDR3
HDD: 320 GB WD blue
OS: windows 10 64 bit

with my current GPU, i can run lots of my games such as no mans sky and GTA V on a mix of ultra/high at around 40+ FPS. but i know i'll need to upgrade the GPU, soon.

so, my question is. if i buy a GTX 950 which wont bottleneck my xeon, will i get good performance in new games? or should i buy a GTX 970? i saw a video of this one guy with a stock x5460 and a 970 running mad max at ultra settings and his FPS is a solid 60 with vsync on. i know my CPU is old, but in like 1 or 2 years, i'm gonna buy a new motherboard + CPU combo, i'm not looking to upgrade right now.

EDIT: my PSU is 350 watts, i'm also gonna upgrade this.

Solution
Yes, it will be good but you have to upgrade the power supply first 500 watts will do fine also u might not want to oc the card if it has a PSU 6 pin connector 😉

ok that's good to know :) thanks for the help

I have a GTX 950 and it will run Battlefield 1 Beta on Low settings and stay, for the most part, above 60 fps. Medium it stays in the 50s, High is in the 40s, and Ultra in the 30s at 1080p.

I think it will do fine for another two years. Just think, the Xbox and PS4 have a GPU that is just behind a GTX 950 in performance. So if they are making games for those for the next two years, then you will be able to play them with a GTX 950. Some games will run at 60fps, others at 30 fps.

*On second thought, a GTX 1050 is rumored to come out later this year. I would wait for that. If they don't come out with it, just get a GTX 1060 3GB on sale or something with the money you saved. I bought the GTX 950 in May of this year, just before the new cards released. Needless to say, I now have both a GTX 950, and GTX 1060 😀

the bottleneck would only be a few frames per second? i could buy one of those, but first i gotta save up and get a new 600 watt PSU, i could make lots of money selling some old PC parts on ebay...

Yes, the bottleneck wouldn't be much. I ran an i3-4160 with a GTX 970 OC'd, the GTX 1060 3GB, and the GTX 1060 6GB Superclocked. It did fine except where multi-threaded operations were needed. But your Xeon, it performs better in multi-threaded operations, so I think it would be fine with something in that $200 range of cards. Most games today utilize multiple threads.

i'm definitely getting that then, i just read a benchmark that had an i5 750 paired with a 1060 and it got incredibly good FPS with a tiny bottleneck, and the i5 is only 13 percent faster than my xeon, but i overclocked mine, so it must be faster than the CPU in the review since that one was stock
