Will a Hiper 630 Watt PSU handle Gtx 260 x 2 1 gig cards

Hi,

Currently I have a Hiper 630 Watt PSU in my sytem but I am wondering if I will need to upgrade this if I put 2 x GTX 260 nVidia cards in.My specs are:

AMD Phenom 9750 Quad Core 2.4 GHz,
4 Gig Ram,
500 Gig Hard drive,
Currently I have 2 x ATI HD 3870 running in Sli mode,
Optiarc DVD RW AD 5200A ATA Drive,
Hiper 630 PSU,
Windows Vista premium 32 bit.

If I put in GTX 260 X 2 PCI-E cards, (I was thinking about Gtx 275 x2 in sli but perhaps then I would have to upgrade the PSU?) will I need more power? Thank you.

1. when you put 2 or more ATi cards on the same system it's called CROSSFIRE, NOT sli.

2. you'll most likely need to change you power supply if you'd put 2x 260s in it.


you can't run 2 nvidia cards on your system cause your motherboard doesn't support sli.

@wiinippongamer, there are plenty of AM2 boards that supports sli (any with 2 x pcie 16x and an NV chipset)

though there are not any boards that support both, so if he has crossfire now, he can't do sli

also, if you plan on moving to to better gpu's, i would get the ATI 5850

also, i would replace the PSU with something better (Corsair 550w for one card, Corsair 750w for 2)

Thanks Yeah....I know it's called Crossfire with my Ati's but I have been looking at Nvidia cards and they are continually talking Sli. My PC supplier also says my motherboard can handle the hd ATI's or the nVidia 260, 275 if I want but they suggested I need 1000 Watt PSU for the 275's. I was asking about the PSU?

I have to use a 2 card setup in the board, I don't care about the crossfire, currently I am not impressed by the HD3870 x2 running in crossfire. Do I need the 1000 w for the 260's?

your current PSU isn't that great, also it doesn't have the correct power connectors for 2 x GTX260

though again, your motherboard will not support sli, only crossfire, as there are no AM2 motherboard that can support sli and crossfire and you have crossfire, you can't use sli

also, i would still suggest the ATI HD5850 and you wouldn't have to replace the PSU
also later if you wanted another 5850 you could replace the PSU then

I have an AMD 2 630 Quad Core CPU with Hypertransport technology according to my pc supplier I can put 2 nVidia gtx 260 or 275's in there or 2 x HD 4850 but is the 4850 much better than the 3870 which doesn't impress me. My motherboard is an Asus M4A78LT-M LE AM3 DDR3. For Sli or Crossfire setups my pc specialist is telling me all that matters is that the cards are the same and they are suggesting even 2 gtx 275's or 295's. I just don't want to spend quite that much right now, especially if I have to upgrade to a 1000 watt PSU.

ok, that motherboard only supports crossfire, it has an amd chipset (780L to be exact), this chipset only supports crossfire

since NV is out, i would still go for the 5850 (and another later)
cheapest ATI Radeon HD 5850

as for the 4850 vs 3870, the 4850 should be quite a bit better, though check the charts here on toms

as for PSU, yours is probably fine for a single card

though for crossfire, i would go for the Corsair 750TX (or HX if you want modular)

What PSU would you suggest that isn't too expensive? Is the ATI HD5850 way better? I have been using ATI for years but don't like the HD 3870. It's just my pc specialist technical department suggested the gtx range as his first choice. I just didn't like their prices....£595 for HD 4870 X 2 plus vat at 17.5 % and I don't want to mention their fee for the GTX 295?!Naturally he wanted me to put a GTX 295 in there.

the HD5850 is a bit more powerful than the GTX285 (about 2 x 4850 or so)
it would work on your current PSU, though if you wanted you could get a better one for later
Corsair 750TX isn't too expensive, though i don't know shops from over the pond (in in the US)

Thanks sounds like a good card then....though I am still considering your suggestion of the 4850's. The Corsair 750 TX is selling over here for about £94.99 with VAT added which isn't too bad. I am now way confused by my pc suppliers technical department, as they know my system and the specs. I bought the machine from Cyberpower over here. Thanks for all the help....over the pond huh?....pretty big pond....wouldn't like to see the ducks!

Umm, the Hiper 630w is a pretty good PSU:

According to Jonny, it performs the same as a Corsair 750 TX over all.

He should be fine even with two GTX 275s, which require about 30w more power than 2 5850.

it seems like a good psu but the corsait 750 can be pushed to about 900w and has a single 60A rail while the hiper has 4 18A rails, making a total of 50A.

the hiper says it can give a max of 870w! but with some stability issues.

i'd go the safe way and get a 5850, and it maybe turns out that it'll fulfill your needs then add another one later on if you want when prices come down, and upgrade your power supply if you do so.

No they can't be pushed that far, my PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750w can run fine at 950w according to their tests but the power supply still should NEVER EVER run over the rating for even a small period of time. His system with 2 GTX 275 would hit about 600w with EVERYTHING drawing 100% power, which never happens, and with 2 5850s it will never go over about 550w, and with a good PSU that is fine, which the Hiper 630w is.
