Dear Sirs,

Please can you tell me if an Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHz Dual-Core Processor work on an AsRock 775i65G R3.0 motherboard? Also in mind the Intel E8400 or E8600. Any alternative recommendations will be considered.

Or will I be best on either:

1. 775, Core 2 Duo, E4700, Conroe, 2.6GHz, 800MHz, 2MB ? (no overclocking).

2. 775, Core 2 Duo, E7300(M0), Wolfdale, 2.66GHz, 1066MHz, 3MB (overlocking required)

I have checked on the ASRock's website and CPU compatible CPU's but its not listed (link below), therefore I need your expert assistance. Also, on the website it refers to other processors but overclocking would be a requirement, I know nothing about overclocking, so I'll need some advice and help there too.

http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/775i65G%20R3.0/?cat=CPU

I'm currently running on Windows 7 Ultimate, 2GB Ram, Max usb Ready-Boost, The top Intel D Processor shown on ASRocks website (775, Pentium D, 960(D0), Presler, 3.60GHz, 800MHz, 4M), Nivida 6800 512MB VGA.

Obviously, cost is an issue so please consider this, so e-bay will be the source of purchase.

Kind regards, Jonathan

Most likely not.
---CPU Support LIST---

According to the CPU support list the board is limited by the 1066 FSB

The E8xxx series runs at 1333 FSB.

Good luck!

-Note: like stated, the older parts are ok if you are given them or find them VERY cheap. You'd be suprised how cheap a basic motherboard /cpu combo can be, and just about everything entry level is leaps and bounds faster than the 1066FSB or less core2duo's.

If Asus does not list the E8500, then it will not support that CPU. In order for the motherboard to be able to recognize the CPU it's BIOS must be updated first. Since Asus has released no such BIOS update, then the CPU will not be identified and the PC may not boot up. Or it may boot up, but it will run at minimum speed.

Why did Asus not bother with an updated BIOS? It's due to technical issues. The 865G chipset came out prior to the release of Conroe (Intel's 1st gen Core 2 Duo / Quad CPUs). It seems the 865G chipset was adapted to support CPUs like the E6700 and Q6600 CPUs, but probably are not at all able to work with Intel 2nd generation Core 2 Duo / Quad CPUs.

Thanks guys so far for your input!

As this is my motherboard, out of that list shown on AsRock's website compatible CPU's, should I go for, bearing in mind of my limited budget, and not understanding of 'overclocking', is it easy to adjust BIOS (any support/DIY guides for the CPU overclocking).

I would be very pleased and grateful if you can tell me the above.
