Will a PCIe 3.0 x16 card work in a PCIe 2.0 x16 slot?

Well I think I want to get a new graphics card, and I was wondering if a PCIe 3.0 x16 card will work in my PCIe 2.0 x16 motherboard slot. What will the performance drop be?

I think that an HD7870 is what I may get.

It should work just fine and there should be no performance drop at all. Even the new cards these days don't use PCIe 2.0 x16 to its highest capacity.

Yes, they will work. PCIe 3.0 is just like USB 3.0 was. It's just a marketing thing to say "We have something new", but you really won't see any real world benefits other than being able to say you have a PCIe 3.0 card.
