Will a quad core cpu solve my problem?

hi, I am having a problem with my computer when i use dvd shrink.it bogs down really badly.in task manager it runs at 70 percent.
I have a core 2 duo e6300 rev. b2 with intel dg965wh motherboard, 4 x 1 gb ddr2 667 ram, hitachi sata 1 250 gb hdd(7200 rpm).would upgrading to a q6600 or q 6700 give me a worth while performance boost?how about the e6600 or e6700.thanks for your help in advance

Yes, video encoding is a pretty CPU-intensive process, so that's where you'd find the most likely room for improvement.

Instead of getting another dual-core like the e6600, I'd see how much you can get out of your existing CPU by overclocking. In fact, that's the first thing I'd try, period, before spending any money on it.

If you want to go to a quad-core, before you buy, make sure the board will support it. That's an older motherboard with an older chipset, and sometimes those will either need a BIOS update to support quad cores, or they will support some but not all quad-cores, or some won't support quad-cores at all. Not sure for your particular board, but definitely look before you leap on that.

yeah, my motherboard wont allow you to overclock.i have done a bios flash already to it.it can accept a q6600 or q6700 maximum.if i upgraded the ram to ddr2 800 4 gb or 8 gb ddr2 667 would i notice a performance increase?i am running windows xp home 32 bit.i am thinking about upgrading to windows vista 64 bit.my board has no support for windows 7

dude, right now my moms pc is running win7, its socket a, fsb 333, not even 400, it uses a sempron 1.83ghz cpu, believe me it will run on ur machine

win7 does it all, just run windows update and microsoft majically puts all the drivers for you

Unless you run out of ram, I don't think you need to replace the ram you have. Vista is not worth it... it's slow and just didn't seem to work for me(crashes occurred a decent amount)...upgrading to win7 was such an improvement. I think as long as your comp runs with an intel/amd proc from 2000 and later you should be able to run win7.
I wouldn't rely on windows update to get all the drivers for your comp, but if you can't seem to find them from the company your parts came from then I guess it's better then nothing.

I think your best bet would be to ditch the cpu & mobo & get a quad core atleast (q8400 onwards), since q6xxx series is extinct now.

well money is tight at the moment.the system i have is pretty decent.just want to get a little more umph out of it.i am trying to locate a q6700.if anyone knows where i can get one for a decent price other than ebay i would appreciate it

the cheapest i found a q6700 for was $175 so ur better off with a q6600
