Since pins 1, 4, & 7 are all common (ground), will a SSD work without the middle pin? A problem caused the middle "pin" on a new SSD to melt. Do you think it will function properly and will trying to use it without that 3rd ground wire cause other problems?

Im not an engineer and dont know the design of the SSD board, and this particular question could very well vary from brand to brand.

With that said, assuming you have a half decent PSU and mobo, the worst that could happen is that it damages the already damaged SSD drive.

Now if you have a crappy PSU (which seems possible since you melted a sata connector) this could damage more components.

Thanks boosted1g. Sort of what I figured - not much to lose if it doesn't work. But I have been chasing this problem for a while now (with other threads here) and so far have no reason for melting cables on any SATA device I connect to this system. (Of course the 2 inexpensive DVDs and old HDD don't seem to be damaged - just the brand new 840 EVO. Can't find any shorts, psu shows proper voltages, and mobo has been replaced. So I'm nervous about plugging things in now. I want to test the SATA devices in a good computer, but don't want to damage it.

Neither the mobo nor the psu are top of the line, but I don't think either is so far down the list as to fall into crappy territory.
