You're mistaking terms - SATA III (6 Gb/s) vs. SATA II (3 Gb/s)

And, yes, you can use a SATA III device in a SATA II port.

Thanks. I am wanting to replace a 500gb HDD with a 1tb drive in my MSI S6000 and didn't know it the newer version was compatible.

To add to that, yes a SATA III can plug into a SATA II port, BUT your going to max out (as I am) on the bandwidth (3Gb) so the performance is cut in half of what you could be getting.
